Chapter 27

We’re standing in a massive field, no other person or structure as far as the eye can see. I am looking at a river and mountains toward the dusky horizon. For a moment, I wonder if this is his home, but it's too…. human… too, familiar. I slowly take in the trees, the cacophony of smells, lavender and pine, fresh air, and grass. I close my eyes and listen to the rustling of leaves from the breeze, a light humming like dragonfly wings zipping past. I don’t hear anything else, our arrival possibly scaring any wildlife away. I don’t want to miss a thing before the sun fully goes down, so I open my eyes again to enjoy the beautiful scene before me. I realize I have seen this before. I know where we are. Shock takes over as I turn to him.

He chews his lip with a sheepish look as he launches into his explanation. “Part of the reason I left before was to scout areas for us. Seeing as my ‘unique’ method of travel would let me literally pop in and out, evaluate an area to see if it met everything you wanted, and leave undetected, it was the fastest way to go about it. I wanted to be sure the land was perfect before I got your hopes up and brought you.”

He hesitates, running his hand through his hair nervously. “When I left so abruptly before, it wasn't only to come and see this. Kil and Rai thought I was just clearing my head and got out of town for a bit, but I panicked and tried to take care of some things back home and botched it all in the process.

“Laila, I have loved you from the moment I saw you and knew you were my future, no matter where it was. I debated abdicating the first day we met; everything fell into place that day. That world has always felt lonely, cold. I have had little desire to go back ever since I left to explore the human realm. Once you came into my life, I thought maybe it wasn’t that place, maybe I was the one who was lonely, maybe with you there we could make a life together. I don’t want to make you choose though. Once you said you wanted to buy the shop, I spent weeks trying to figure out a way to make it all work, so you didn’t have to give anything up because of me. In the end, I couldn’t see a way through, so I went home to tell my parents my decision. Staying here, building this with you, for us. If that’s what you want, I’m all in.”

I gape at him, too shocked to form thoughts, let alone a response. “As you know, this wasn’t on the market, but I researched and found the owners. The minute I came and saw it, I knew this was it. You were totally right when you picked the location.
